The Vengeful Recap 2026-08-07

The struggle for House Rannek has become a war against certainty itself.

Marchioness Maria Rannek reached the western Admiralty dockyards with Sapphire, Andrew, Oren Bell, Trajan, Sister Pira Tradewise, and Sir Erik Malmann. The facility ought to have offered soldiers, ships, naval authority, and a defensible place from which to answer the crisis at Castle Rannek. Instead, it offered an anxious lesson: an institution can retain its uniforms, its codes, and its chain of command after someone else has learned to wear them.

Maria entered under her own authority, only to be accused of imposture by a supposed Marshal and a woman claiming to be Gwyniviere Rannek. The false Gwyniviere could not withstand the simplest test of her stolen life. When challenged to paint, she hid behind an injured hand; when offered healing, she had no answer that made the excuse less suspicious. Sapphire’s moonbeam exposed her as a shapechanger. Andrew drove the Marshal into the same light and exposed him as another.

Trajan, a Face-Stealer himself, revealed his true form just long enough to unsettle the captives before returning to Magistrate Tonon’s stolen appearance. The supposed Mark Malthrek proved not to be Mark at all, but one of the lifelike flesh golems associated with Crispin Mallow. Oren’s absurd command—“and his name was Rumplestiltskin”—dropped it where it stood.

The captives had poison teeth meant to turn interrogation into silence. Trajan removed them before they could be used. Their answers did not make the situation gentler: Reformist agents possessed valid naval authentication despite Maria still holding her signet, and some unspecified credential had been taken from Marquess Uther or Lance Rannek. The command structure had been compromised badly enough that an order to deploy forces into Maiden’s Field could no longer be trusted merely because it arrived through official channels.

Vice-Marshal Tyrion Donmar had recognized the fraud and been imprisoned for it. Once freed, he made Maria prove herself in turn—not out of cruelty, but because a false Marchioness had already appeared at Castle Rannek. Exhausted by the ritual, Maria nevertheless supplied what he needed. Donmar resumed command with an impossible brief: protect the real Marchioness, restore a force that could be trusted, and help retake a castle already occupied by enemies who knew how to imitate its people.

The party could identify Face-Stealers by anatomy, but that was only a beginning. A person who passed such a test might still be another kind of shapeshifter, a bribed officer, a forged identity, or an ordinary traitor. There would be no single clean ritual that made the base safe.

Meanwhile, the larger danger acquired a name and a method. Crispin Mallow was identified as a Reformist and the Bearer of the Candle at Castle Malthrek: a maker of puppets, an abductor, and a surgeon of horrors. His designs had accelerated against the Ranneks after earlier intervention at Castle Malthrek upset plans that had been intended for a later hour.

The party divided. Maria, Sapphire, Andrew, Trajan, Sister Pira, and Oren held the naval front. Hellion Blanchimontt, Sir Hilis Brastok, Angel and Gwyniviere Rannek, Erik Malmann, and their allies prepared to enter Castle Rannek itself.

Angel carried them through with dimension door, humming the Rannek Anthem into the throne room. They arrived to an empty throne, startled guards, and the feeling that an alarm had already begun to spread through the castle. A figure wearing Sandor Kethlas’s face came forward and embraced Angel. Angel and Hellion knew at once that it was not Sandor.

The thing unfolded into a grotesque composite of displaced limbs, stolen flesh, and shifting organs. It knew enough private history to taunt Brastok and plead with Angel. It fought with a detached jaw like a blade, scattered itself into crawling pieces, and remade its body when struck. Yet the party found its undoing in restoration rather than destruction. Healing magic made the creature reject what had been forced together. A healer’s touch caused a limb to drop away; Cure Wounds separated much of its lower body; even a healing draught broke its jaw and surrounding tissue apart.

When the false Sandor finally fell, the party discovered that his face had been worn over another shapeshifter’s dappled skin. The immediate horror gave way to another: a heart-like fragment within the remains belonged to an urdefolcin, an ancient non-humanoid protector of forest communities. Hags had used such fragments in rituals and curses. Oren already knew Mallow had traded with hags for them; now he understood that the fragments had been fed into Mallow’s puppets.

The castle’s refuge held a more intimate catastrophe. There, the party found Stacy Cartwright, terrified, altered, and still conscious inside a body she could not command. Legend Lore revealed a bargain made in the belief that she was protecting the Malthreks, followed by Mallow’s more brutal control. It also revealed the presence of Auraxx: a gold dragon whose body had been carved from the manifested form of a cursed gold-canary prison and grafted, in part, into Stacy before Mallow took the greater portion for himself.

Auraxx had crossed the Realm Bridge in defiance of draconic orders to protect fey refugees. The curse had anticipated his choice. His soul remains imprisoned in the damaged canary; his dismantled body cannot simply be restored. Stacy’s body, meanwhile, erupted into counterfeit dragon anatomy—scales, claws, mismatched wings, unstable teleportation, fire, and radiant force. Greater Restoration cleared her mind but did not return control. The party contained her rather than abandoning her to the thing Mallow had made.

Elsewhere, Oren reconnoitred the compromised installation near Maiden’s Field. He found people who had escaped an unspecified purge, a perimeter shaped by Face-Stealers and Malthrek-like golems, and a growing suspicion that the enemy may itself be a shapeshifter. The party slipped past guards under the distraction of Enthrall, but the questions ahead remain larger than one silent entry.

The Reformists have infiltrated settlements, bases, and perhaps more of Senera’s institutions than anyone yet understands. They contaminate food and place parasites through their victims’ ears. Their operations appear designed to exploit political division, weaken resistance, and seize magical resources. Whether all this prepares an aberrant or extraplanar invasion remains a theory—but the missing aberration egg once sent to the Hags of Hama has not been found.

The Hicklander conflict continues to burn through the cracks. Black-powder production resumed after the raid on its known site because the Gauntlet of Elemental Transmutation could turn salt into powder. The surviving network remains hidden. Negotiation may still require Kelthyr Kulok, while Minfilia Diaz and Oscar Savoy remain trapped in Thrantorbury’s time loop. The Malthreks themselves are at the Travertines, and their direct intervention could inflame the Hicklanders further.

Castle Rannek is not yet wholly safe. Sandor, Uther, Lance, and the missing court wizards must still be found. More impostors may remain. Stacy must be freed if freedom is possible, Auraxx’s soul may yet need release, and the meaning of the warning that “a life must end” is still unknown.

At the western Admiralty facility, the party has found a teleportation circle that no one present can operate: they lack a caster capable of the spell and its required magic. The Orbs of Enhancement can bear the diamond cost and spell-slot burden, but a competent reader of the spell—one who knows the destination’s sigil—must still be found.

Senera needs trustworthy allies. It needs a way to recognize its enemies without teaching itself to suspect every face. And, somewhere beneath the transformations, parasites, false bodies, and stolen names, it still needs the people who have not yet been brought home.
