Anton Lightning

Anton Lightning is an engineer, fighter, and member of the Rozenmaiden and La Camaraderie. The name Anton Lightning originated as his underground fighting arena name, but became his primary identity after he joined the Rozenmaiden.

Anton is most often recorded in association with Pecorine, with whom he operated during the Sea Hags affair in Raibon and the later investigation of the Kalassarian ruins beneath Eastonton. His public reputation combined arena toughness, practical engineering, and enough field reliability that allies specifically requested him when a magical crisis required nonmagical repair work.

Anton Lightning first became known under the name he used in underground fighting. After joining the Rozenmaiden, he retained the name as his ordinary identity rather than treating it merely as a stage name. This made the fighting name inseparable from his later maritime and investigative work.

The arena background also shaped how others approached him. Anton was not treated as a courtly specialist or purely academic engineer, but as someone who could work under pressure, handle danger at close range, and improvise with whatever tools were available.

During the Sea Hags affair, Anton and Pecorine were present around the negotiations that became known as the Meeting of the Four. During a break in the discussions, the two helped thwart an attempt to bomb the meeting venue.

Anton also became involved in the effort to protect Benoit Marconne, a young employee of the Parvese Houses of Pleasures. After Pecorine met Benoit during the Chicken Chase game, Benoit lost a wager that brought him to lunch with Pecorine and Anton while dressed in a chinchilla costume. The meeting revealed Benoit’s desire for ordinary friendship outside Rosemunda Parvese’s control, and Anton and Pecorine planned to bring him to a Mirian Trading Company Fight Night where he could be warned about Rosemunda’s plan to take over his body.

During the Vengeful affair, Anton was requested as the engineer for the Orb of Absorption found in the Kalassarian ruins beneath the Eastonton Paladinate. The orb drained ambient magic and possibly life energy, while also interfering with magical items and curse effects brought near it. This made ordinary magical solutions unreliable.

Anton approached the problem with nonmagical tools, including copper, ropes, pulleys, copper tubing, and manual inspection. He wanted to examine the mechanism directly before committing to a repair plan, and his rough approach was expected to take about an hour before available energy could be tested.

Mystine Nightingale later arrived with Anton and Pecorine as reinforcements, then teleported them back to the ruins for the orb investigation. Anton’s role there distinguished him from the many spellcasters involved in the Eastonton crisis: he was valuable precisely because the orb’s magic- draining radius made mundane engineering necessary.

Anton and Pecorine were later connected, uncertainly, to the Moreaux mushroom trail. The mushroom was associated with a cannibalistic incident, Narmaya’s alleged infiltration of the Kincades, and one victim’s transformation into a great aberration rather than a mind flayer. Anton’s exact part in that chain of events remained unclear, but the association placed him near one of the stranger threads linking Reformist activity, aberrant transformation, and rare occult substances.
