Marlion I Dragonheart
Marlion I Dragonheart, also known by the true name Steinar, is the Crown Prince of Senera, a son of King Alitar I Dragonheart and Aina Dragonheart, and a bearer of the Topaz Sword of Summer. He became a central royal actor in the Travertine and Malthrek crises, where he used both crown authority and personal action to contain Reformist infiltration.
After Aina’s death, King Alitar remarried, taking Murwes Dragonheart as his wife. Through that marriage, Murwes’s son Kelthyr Kulok became Marlion’s stepsibling.
Family and Name
Section titled “Family and Name”Marlion was born in Thrantorbury to Alitar I Dragonheart and Aina Dragonheart. He was publicly known by the royal name Marlion, but privately revealed the name Steinar to Tiphanie during the Travertine crisis, distinguishing it from the name chosen for him by his father.1 This disclosure became part of the unusual trust between the Crown Prince and Tiphanie, who operated beside him while disguised as one of his court wizards.
The death of Aina and Alitar’s later marriage to Murwes Dragonheart made Kelthyr Kulok part of Marlion’s stepfamily. Kelthyr’s own mixed ancestry and Hicklander affiliations placed Marlion’s family circle across several of the political and magical tensions that shaped the crisis.
Travertine Crisis
Section titled “Travertine Crisis”Marlion arrived at Travertine Keep during the preparations for the proposed marriage of Luke Malthrek and Pallia Travertine. The public occasion gave him a formal opening to speak with Luke by presenting a liege lord’s wedding boon. Tiphanie used that audience to examine Luke for Reformist influence and found that he had not yet become a Reformist, though he had been groomed toward Reformist doctrine by Duchess Antoinette Malthrek and likely by Pallia.
When a Reformist spy attempted to interfere with the audience, Marlion killed her with the Topaz Sword of Summer before she could complete her spell. He then ordered servants to witness the crime committed against the Crown, buying Tiphanie additional time to work on Luke. Luke was later moved to Marlion’s rooms at the Grand Waterfall Inn, where John Malthrek briefed the group on the Malthrek family’s suspicions about Antoinette and the Reformists.1
After Pallia was exposed, Marlion postponed the wedding rather than dissolving the political settlement outright. He wanted the marriage problem resolved in a way that preserved Crown interests, stabilized the Travertines, and kept Luke useful if his Reformist grooming could be managed. Katalin Helsinki emerged as the replacement bride through a hastily supported Dragonheart connection, allowing Luke’s political place in the Travertines to be preserved without Pallia.2
Topaz Sword of Summer
Section titled “Topaz Sword of Summer”Marlion bore the Topaz Sword of Summer, one of the Elven Boons. During the Travertine investigations the sword marked him as the Summer bearer and allowed him to act decisively against Reformist threats. Tiphanie later studied the sword and concluded that its protections may fail if the wielder holds fear in his heart, which may explain why other Dragonheart bearers had not been able to use it as effectively. Marlion’s effectiveness with the blade was attributed to his habit of acting before fear could take hold.3
The sword also became politically dangerous. Reformist-aligned nobles and clergy later sought to turn confused reports from the Travertines against Marlion, including accusations that he had become unstable or had used the Topaz Sword to cause unlawful deaths. By the time the Castle Malthrek crisis developed, allied investigators believed the accusation might be used before the Peerage as part of a broader move against the royal family.4
Royal Response
Section titled “Royal Response”Marlion received intelligence from Minfilia Diaz, Oscar Savoy, Tiphanie, and their allies about the Reformists, Revivalists, face stealers, aberrant parasites, and the use of magical children and organs in wider operations. He was warned that Senera faced a threat larger than local Reformist infiltration, with threads reaching Sanery, Calamutz, Poasah, Raibon, Shagnaery, and areas around Bastion.
At Travertine Keep, Marlion helped stabilize the household after Pallia’s exposure. He and Tiphanie held a staff meeting, preserved jobs where possible, and avoided public explanations that would turn the keep into panic. He also offered to garrison a navy battalion before the wedding and took part in plans involving the keep’s restored teleportation circle and the University of Thrantorbury.
Later Operations
Section titled “Later Operations”Marlion later remained active with Tiphanie and other allies at the University front. He was wounded but functional after fighting shadowy forces and conjured monsters, with the topaz-hilted sword still marking him as the bearer of Summer. During the same period, Seneran peerage law became central to the conflict: a complaint against the royal family could trigger a vote, and Marlion may have been allowing Reformist-aligned nobles to expose themselves through their response to the distorted Travertine and Malthrek rumors.5
