Maria Rannek

Maria Rannek is the Marchioness of Rannek, wife of Uther Rannek, and mother of Lance, Laudine, Gwyniviere, Merlin, and Angel Rannek. During the Vengeful affair she attended the Malthrek-Travertine wedding in the company of Angel and Gwyniviere Rannek.

Maria is recorded as the principal maternal figure in Angel’s correspondence during the Rannek crisis. When Angel returned to Rannek with Lance Rannek to assist the Bishop of Rannek, she sent Maria a message saying that she was safe, missed her, and was heading to the bishop. Maria’s answer expressed relief that Angel had survived and concern for her safety.1

Maria and Gwyniviere continued to the wedding of Luke Malthrek and Pallia Travertine while Uther remained occupied in the Rannek Delta. At Travertine Keep, Maria was lodged in the Rannek wing and was among those briefed on the Reformist threat after the crisis around Luke and Pallia escalated. She and Gwyniviere were initially told that Pallia was dead rather than merely unconscious, reflecting the confusion and secrecy around the Travertine incident.2

Maria was also present when Pallia, exposed as a dangerous hag and Reformist agent, was guarded in the infirmary by Angel, Gwyniviere, and Sir Brastok. Angel’s mother was later resting after attacks by aberrations and religious extremists, placing Maria among the family members directly affected by the wider Reformist crisis.2

During discussions of Mark Malthrek’s possible magical compromise, the Marchioness was treated as someone who could rescind Gwyniviere’s betrothal if necessary. This made Maria’s household authority relevant not only to family matters, but also to the political management of the Malthrek-Rannek connection.3
