Queilei

Queilei watercolor: woodland cottages, tree dwellings, a fenced orchard, and mountains

Queilei, a watercolor by Enrico Joaquim L Suarez.

Queilei, known in Common as Marim, is an elven settlement in the northern portion of the Footbowl Basin, at the foot of the Northern Maltreks. Its inhabitants include elves, nymphs, dryads, and pixies. Its protected interior contains shops, gardens, woodland homes, and a shrine to Oran the Green Lord. Elderberry, a druid called the Oakfather, leads the settlement.

The entrance is known as Elsewhere. Protective fey magic reverses directions and confuses non-elven creatures attempting to enter. Its protections include Obliviate Rain, Oblivion Moss, and Befuddling Mist.

Some facilities are openly accessible. Foxglove’s fruit and vegetable stand and Rook’s game and hunting supplies are not hidden. Non-fey visitors may also use the campsite, a small clearing encircled by trees. The Mallard’s Tavern, Pennyroyal’s tea shop, Fairy Wand, the Green Lord’s shrine, and Oran’s Herb Garden are reserved for fey.

Elderberry lives in a small cottage with Snowdrop. As Oakfather, he is the settlement’s leader.

Queilei observes rules of reciprocity and hospitality. A gift from a friend, enemy, or stranger must be accepted and answered with a gift or service of comparable value, though repayment need not be immediate. Anyone entering a home is entitled to gracious treatment until their words or actions show them undeserving of it. Harming a resident is dishonorable.

Oaths and promises made within the settlement have the power to bind their makers in strange ways, regardless of how seriously the speaker intended them. Local trade uses goods and favors rather than coins.

  • Spring: Hatching Day, the Festival of Spring, and the Wild Hunt.
  • Summer: Midsummer’s Night.
  • Autumn: the Harvest Festival and the Festival of the Spirits.
  • Winter: the Yuletide Festival.

Basil Foxglove manages the fruit and vegetable stand. The Foxglove family grows seasonal produce at its farm, including an orchard of star apples, a fruit unique to Queilei. Their peak season is Imbolc, in spring. They may be eaten or made into star wine.

Sparrow Bird’s Nest manages Rook’s game and hunting supplies, one of the settlement’s openly accessible businesses.

Talon Bird’s Nest manages the fey-only tavern. Its menu lists a glass of Smell Like Rain at two copper pieces and a plate of Sunrise over the Mountains at seven copper pieces.

The dryad Pennyroyal serves tea selected according to the customer’s emotions. The shop is reserved for fey.

Sharyn Lunar-Tear and Raistasi Lunar-Tear manage Fairy Wand, assisted by Snowdrop. The shop sells potions and charms made and enchanted by Sharyn. The charms take the form of bracelets, key charms, and pageholders. Fairy Wand is reserved for fey.

The Lunar-Tear family tends the Green Lord’s shrine, a massive oak tree. An artifact bearing Banish Blight is embedded within it, a gift from a girl who introduced herself as La Papessa. The family also owns Oran’s Herb Garden. Both sites are reserved for fey.

The Forest of Isolation is the home of Queilei’s dryads. It contains Balam Falls and the fishing spot.

Balam Falls is a hidden waterfall inhabited by nymphs, with jewelfish in its waters.

The fishing spot provides trout, rainbow trout, freshwater shrimp, and silverling. Rainbow trout are available throughout the year; seasonal catches include sweetfish in summer, gobi in autumn, and pike in winter.

Heartroot Forest is a foraging ground containing Venn’s Hollow, Sparkling Waters, and Eagle’s Nest.

Statues at Venn’s Hollow commemorate an elven hero who fought in the Draco-Giant War and protected Queilei in the Green Lord’s name.

Sparkling Waters is a natural resource protected by nymphs.

Eagle’s Nest is a series of canopy houses concealed in tall trees, home to the Bird’s Nest family.

The Glade of Echoes is a hunting and foraging ground.

Goosegrass, a wood-elf druid, and See-bright, a nymph, are the family’s father and mother. The family includes the following households and members:

  • Robin-run-in-the-grass, his elven wife Poppy, and their daughters Pansy and Pepper.
  • Scaldhead, a guard, his elven wife Ivy, their sons Snapdragon, Fern, and Yarrow, and their daughter Holly.
  • Bark, a guard.
  • Starweed, an herbalist and cleric, Starweed’s elven husband Cypress, their daughters Maple and Peach, and their son Mandrake.
  • Torches, a scout, with Charlotte Highbury and Dorothy Highbury.
  • Tarragon, a merchant and cleric, and Henna, a human lover.
  • The twins Sharyn and Raistasi.
  • Hawthorn, a toddler, and Chicory, an infant.

The Foxglove family includes Resin, Valerian, Basil, Cypress, Thyme, Shallot, Daffodil, Fig, and Mugwort. Basil’s household includes his wife Violet and daughter Feather. Thyme’s household includes Thyme’s husband Sparrow and sons Huckleberry and Swallowtail.

The Bird’s Nest family includes Eagle, Camellia, Violet, Hawks, Sparrow, Talon, and Corven.

Queilei’s river nymphs include Vanira, Dilara, Shell, Inara, Kitra, Cherie, Sigh, Vesper, Reverie, and Quesera.

The dryads include Bride-of-the-Sun, Burning Bush, Pennyroyal, Catmint, Tigerlily, and Bliss.

The pixies include Dagger Flower, Mimi, Upelkuchen, and Fright. Elderberry and Snowdrop also live in the settlement.
