Thrantorbury

Thrantorbury is the capital city of the Kingdom of Senera and the seat of the Royal House of Dragonheart. The city occupies a magically carved shelf on the lower flanks of Mt Thraltor, beneath the separate, higher shelf of Castle Dragonheart.

An early-modern-style prospect of Thrantorbury. Terrain and worldbuilding by Nico, campus layout by Yomi, and elevation illustration by Ran. The drawing establishes the broad geographic relationships, not surveyed distances, a compass bearing, or a room-by-room castle plan; individual building forms and the exact road alignment are illustrative.

Mt Thraltor has three peaks, regarded as a single mountain within the Ranterg Mountains. Its highest summit rises behind Castle Dragonheart; the castle does not occupy the mountain’s summit.

The two inhabited shelves have different origins. The lower plateau, where Thrantorbury stands, was magically carved by the local mathrantorgralok. The higher castle shelf was carved by the Kalassarians. The town and university district are near the royal seat, but neither shares its terrace.

The Crown Road approaches from below, climbing the exposed mountainside in broad switchbacks before entering Thrantorbury through the Crown Gate. It connects the mountain capital with Surrey-on-the-Brams.

Retaining walls support the road where needed. These are distinct from the raised defensive walls and crenellated wall-walks commanding the final ascent and flanking the gate. The defenses concentrate on the accessible approach rather than enclosing the entire plateau in a continuous curtain wall; the cliffs themselves provide much of its protection.

Magical shaping may have been used in the supporting works, but their construction is not tied to a particular spell. A wall made through magic need not depend on a continuing enchantment to hold up the road.

Town buildings gather near the approach to the castle tunnel. A controlled buffer separates civilian streets from its mouth, with Royal Guard facilities inspecting castle-bound goods, services, and visitors. Passing through the town gate does not grant access to the royal seat.

An auxiliary Royal Guard military complex, including a lookout tower, stands on the Thrantorbury plateau. It is separate both from the tunnel’s inspection facilities and from the main Royal Guard complex within Castle Dragonheart.

Castle Dragonheart occupies the higher shelf beneath Thraltor’s greatest summit. Its site overlooks Thrantorbury and the approaches through the mountains. The royal seat is distinct from the Haven on Senera’s western coast.

The Kalassarian predecessor of the present royal complex housed the governor of Seneria, the imperial name for Senera, and was intended to accommodate the Emperor should he visit. It was a palatial seat of government as well as a defensible residence, not simply a fortress made habitable afterward.

Its architecture favors substantial wings, smaller internal courts, sheltered galleries, and protected entrances rather than an uninterrupted skyline of battlements. The established royal complex includes the High Keep, associated with the Maidenfeld period and housing the Dragon Throne Room; the Crown Cathedral, built in the early Dragonheart reign and connected to the keep by a covered bridge; the Court Quarter, with chambers, archives, treasury vaults, and administrative offices; and the Royal Ward, with residences, diplomatic quarters, guard barracks, and service buildings.

Kalassarian engineering allowed for magical spectacle and magical fallbacks alongside durable physical works. The defensive problem included teleporting intruders, magically flying casters, and mounted air cavalry: a high cliff or tall perimeter wall was not sufficient by itself. Sheltered circulation and internal divisions therefore mattered alongside guards and magical protection. The particular wards and their workings remain unspecified.

A large arch in the mountain face opens onto the magically created tunnel that is the primary route from Thrantorbury toward Castle Dragonheart. This passage is distinct from the exposed road bringing travelers up to the town.

The tunnel is neither dank nor stifling. Numerous small air passages cut by the Kalassarian magical engineering corps provide ventilation through ordinary airflow. Non-magical lamps can burn steadily inside without their flames dimming for lack of air. Magic made the excavation possible; the ventilation does not require a continuously active enchantment.

The route through the mountain, its upper exit, and the positions of its ventilation passages are not shown in the elevation.

The city is home to the prestigious University of Thrantorbury, particularly known for cartography. Its campus plan, colleges, and student facilities are described in the university article.

The college-town area occupies part of the lower plateau, separate from the castle grounds. Within the university, the Grounds descend toward a lagoon used for maritime practical studies. The College of Maritime Studies stands near the lagoon and the College of Evocation; the latter also uses the lower grounds for practice away from the academic core.
