Maiden's Bay

Maiden’s Bay is a protected harbor in Western Senera that shelters Port Mibram and the Seneran Royal Navy Western Command. It facilitates ruutine trade from the Maidenfeld spice trade network, as well as local maritime trade between the Rannek Marches and the Western Lowlands via Port Sera-by-Malterdale.

Maiden’s Bay is a naturally shallow embayment opening westward onto the Havmals Ocean. Its waters are brackish, with tidal exchange from the ocean mixing with freshwater from the Rannek coastal plain. Some of that freshwater enters through the Rannek Delta, but much of the bay’s steady inflow comes less visibly from the Malter River system, whose waters pass underground through the Western Lowlands’ limestone karsts before re-emerging through springs, seeps, and submerged vents around the inner bay.

This karst-fed inflow gives the bay a more reliable freshwater contribution than its surface rivers would suggest, but it also leaves the harbor prone to shoaling. Fine sediment from the Rannek lowlands and mineral deposits carried through the karst system settle readily in the bay’s sheltered waters, especially near the approaches to Port Mibram.

The deep-water harbor used by Port Mibram and the Seneran Royal Navy Western Command is therefore partly artificial. A stone mole protects the main anchorage from ocean swell, while dredged channels and basins keep the naval dockyards and merchant quays open to heavier vessels.

For most of recorded history, Maiden’s Bay saw little importance aside from local trade between coastal settlements. Its shallow waters made it impractical for larger ships, and its location away from the Beteran mainland diminished its usefulness for maritime trade at the time.

During the reign of the Maidenfelds, a stone mole was built to control tidal effects and silt from the open ocean. This allowed for more drastic dredging and larger harbors to be built. It was at this time that Port Mibram was founded under the supervision of the Ranneks, and was made to anchor larger vessels. Maiden’s Port was expanded as well, but the debris and silt from the Rannek Delta redeposited onto the bed too often, which still limited its usefulness.
